State Museum and Old Slave Owner's House

This week in class we talked a lot about the slavery in Brazil. For a long time the history of slavery here was a pretty ugly one, with very cruel treatment of those poor people. After class one day we had the opportunity to go to a museum called the Museu do Estado de Pernambuco (The Pernambuco State Museum). Pernambuco is the state that Recife is located in. My favorite part of the museum was a tour of the home of a slave owner. The home was beautiful, and underneath the home in the basement is where the slaves were held, called the senzala. This particular home was not typical of many other ones, it was more of an in between stage before they were bought by a new owner to work on their plantation, usually sugar. I really enjoyed the tour; it was interesting to see some of the things that we talked about this week in class.

This is a picture of the outside of the senzala, where the slaves were brutally held.

The other side of the home. You can see how beautiful it was even though it was made so long ago.
